About the Gardens at Kelmarsh Hall

Revitalising the garden at Kelmarsh started in 1998. In the herbaceous borders we are replanting to recapture their 1930’s heyday. In the kitchen garden the vinery has been restored and cut flower borders laid out. The Kelmarsh Estate is a charitable trust and its 3.5 gardeners are only human. The work achieved so far has earned us a place as an RHS partner garden. But there is still more to do!

Garden Volunteers - Are you happy to help?

Volunteering opportunities for: Garden Stewards & Gardeners

How about being a Sunday afternoon Volunteer Garden Steward

On Sundays from Easter until the end of September the Tea Room and garden are open 2-5pm. We’d like a garden steward there to welcome visitors and to keep an eye on things. If you are courteous, outgoing and enjoy imparting gardening knowledge and a warm welcome, perhaps you’d like to give three hours on a Sunday afternoon once a month.

In return we offer the chance for you and your companion to see the garden progress through the season and to learn more about Kelmarsh. There’s free tea and cake for you both too!

Perhaps you’d prefer getting your hands dirty?

In 2007 we are setting up a small vegetable growing project on a fallow bed in the walled garden. We’d like to offer the ‘fruits’ of our labour to visitors by stocking a little stall on Thursday afternoons when the Hall is open.

The aims are to:

  • Get volunteers involved.
  • Provide another ‘growing feature’ for visitors to see.
  • Give visitors an opportunity to buy home grown veg.
  • Cultivate more of the walled garden in beautiful utility.
  • Emphasise the role of the kitchen garden in producing edibles.

We want the project to benefit the garden and volunteers alike

We can offer volunteers:

  • A lovely working environment.
  • The chance to meet like minded people and join in events.
  • The opportunity to get involved with veg and maybe learn something!

In return we’d like volunteers to:

  • Turn up regularly on a Thursday from April until September.
Help to grow vegetables as part of a team under the direction of the Assistant Head Gardener.
  • Cultivate the plot, pick and wash produce for afternoon visitors to ‘buy’.
  • Engage with visitors. Offer them tips on growing and cooking veg!
