Genius Loci: Unexpected Histories of the Country House
Our understanding of the 21st century country house tends to be one of a succession of histories and events. That expectation is supported by emphasis being placed on presentation of country house as a location for successive historical events, as well as a buoyant industry engaged in cultural myth-making through literature, film and television. In our series of autumn lectures at Kelmarsh Hall we contrast an example of the successful stage-setting of one country house in the twentieth century with the histories that may be discovered through one particular form of historical record, the inventory. We shall also consider the lives of those who enabled the country house to function behind the scenes and how they have become increasingly prominent in the public conscience.
Sessions:
05 October 2023, 2pm – 4pm
My Home is My Castle: The fashioning of Chillingham Castle, and other interior motives
Speaker: Dr. Conny Bailey
Tickets £8 per person, or £21 for a bundle of all 3 lectures.
Include lecture, tea, coffee, biscuits and garden entry (gardens open at 1pm-2pm)
